City Boys Discover A Rare and Precious New Substance: Mud

Yesterday, sitting on an expanse of grass overlooking the Hudson on a perfect sunny day, Declan, Grey and several co-conspirators discovered mud. Frisbees, soccer balls, freeze tag, and all other attractions suddenly paled beside the excitement of interacting with the mysterious admixture of dirt and water.

I am occasionally struck by the gulf of experience between kids who grow up in the city and those who grow up in the burbs, and this was one of those moments. I am, for the record, a big proponent of the what cities have to offer kids — I will post about that in the coming days — but there is no doubt that there are experiential sacrifices.

  1. btw, if you are a representative of Hudson River Parks, I would like to assure you that our offspring did not create the mud patch … they simply reorganized (some of it onto their shirts) a small, previously existing muddy quagmire.
